Headaches

Tension headaches, also known as cervicogenic headaches, generate because of tension in the cervical spine.  In this video, Dr. Behrend discusses the cause and effects of these headaches, as well as treatment for relief.

1.  Classic Symptoms of a Tension Headache

  • A headache with associated neck pain, stiffness, discomfort at the base of the skull, and possible radiating pain across the scalp and back of an eye

2.  Evaluation

  • Examining the cervical spine's range of motion (lateral bend, rotation, and flexion/extension)
  • Soft tissue evaluation for muscle tension
  • Functional movement assessment

3.  Treatment

  • Spinal manipulation of the neck and upper back to free up fixated segments
  • Dry needling
  • Rehabilitation exercises for strength and stability
